Shraga Gold began by singing with family and friends and conducting choirs for local occasions in the 1990s. Formed in Satmar Williamsburg, he turned that lived musical knowledge into Shira Choir in 2003, building a professional adult ensemble around harmony, rehearsal, presentation, and the melodies carried through communal life.
The choir grew from those local beginnings into weddings, recordings, major gatherings, and productions around the world. Its history shows a creative institution developing from within Satmar life and then becoming part of the wider Hasidic public.
Shira's collaborations also reveal how Hasidic musical culture works: singers, composers, arrangements, and melodies move across communal boundaries while the communities themselves retain distinct religious identities.
