Matbia begins with an encounter familiar across Satmar neighborhoods: a person collecting tzedakah meets someone who wants to give. Its card places a separate chip in each of four corners, allowing the donor to assign an amount or giving rule to each corner and choose one with a tap.
Behind that brief exchange is a wider system. Donors can fund an account, review transactions, collect tax documentation, track maaser, schedule deposits, distribute printed tokens, and manage the account through a web portal, text messages, or an automated telephone line.
The design adapts payment technology to an existing culture of direct and frequent giving. Kiosks in Williamsburg, Monroe, Borough Park, and Monsey make the system available inside the neighborhoods where those encounters already take place.
