The Jewish Community Council of Williamsburg gives families a place to bring problems that cross the boundary between communal life and public government. Its work ranges from navigating services and immigration questions to advocating for education, housing, safety, and neighborhood needs.
Rabbi Moshe Indig describes the council as receiving about 80 requests each day. Its working rule is to help callers find a path forward even when the organization cannot solve a problem directly: connect them with the right office, person, program, or institution and remain available until the question has somewhere to go.
The council is associated with the Satmar kehillos that follow Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum. The United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg provides a parallel center of social service and civic advocacy associated with Williamsburg's other major Satmar leadership center. Together, their existence makes visible how one neighborhood can contain shared communal needs alongside distinct structures of representation.
